Introduction to Εnvironmental Science & Engineering

The aim of the course is to introduce students to technical terminology relating to the field of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering through the use of texts from a variety of sources. More specifically, the course focuses on:

  • Familiarizing students with technical terminology specific to their discipline.
  • Analyzing the linguistic features of academic writing.
  • Examining the structure and language of journal articles and popular science/newspaper articles.
  • Examining the features of other academic genres, such as abstracts and literature reviews.

Organic Chemistry. Using academic language in: Definitions / Categorizations / Generalizations.
Inorganic Chemistry.
Synthesizing information from various sources: Paraphrasing and summarizing Ι.
Chemical engineering thermodynamics. Synthesizing information from various sources: Paraphrasing and summarizing ΙΙ.
Transport phenomena: Fluid mechanics.
Citing and referencing.
Transport phenomena: Heat and mass transfer.
The structure and language of journal articles.
Materials engineering I. The structure and language of popular science articles. Comparing research articles to popular science articles. Converting articles from one genre to the other.
Materials engineering II. The structure and language of (journal) abstracts.
Introduction to Metallurgy.
The structure and language of the literature review section in journal articles.
Introduction to Geotechnology. Consolidation of academic writing skills.
Ethics in Engineering. Oral presentation skills. Presentations. Revision of main concepts.
