The course covers the aspects of surface engineering, to develop fundamental understanding and the role of materials to allow surface selection for mechanical contacts and their surrounding environmental conditions. It includes a wide overview of surface engineering with an emphasis on the fabrication, characterization and application of hard coatings. It will explore a range of surface treatments and advanced coatings that are designed for the optimization of the surface properties of relatively low-cost materials, aiming on their utilization in high requirements applications. Development of coatings or surface treatments with properties aimed at improving:
Anti-Friction Properties
Magnetic Properties
Conductive and Semiconductor Properties
Engineering Properties
Corrosion Protection
Surface engineering processes.
Erosion resistant coatings deposited by Chemical Vapour Deposition, Physical Vapour Deposition, High Velocity Oxy-Fuel (thermal spray), and weld overlay.
- Plating and nano-composite coatings/surfaces.
- Corrosion resistant surfaces/high temperature.
- Surface modification: induction hardening, ion- implantation, carburising, carbo-nitriding, nitriding and nitro-carburising.
