My name is Dimitrios Panias and I am a metallurgical engineer, who graduated from the School of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in 1984. I completed my doctoral thesis on gold pyrometallurgy at NTUA in 1989. I am Professor in Extractive Metallurgy at NTUA teaching Chemistry, Non-Ferrous Metals, Extractive Metallurgy, Transport Phenomena, Computational Chemical Thermodynamics, and Electrometallurgical Processes. I am the director of the Laboratory of Metallurgy and head of the TeSMet (Technologies for Sustainable Metallurgy) research group.


My research interests include but are not limited to Extractive metallurgy, Electrometallurgy, Waste Valorization, Wastewater Treatment, Geopolymerization (lightweight porous and fire-resistant inorganic polymers) as well as Chemical processing of ores and metallurgical wastes with ionic liquids. My research group TeSMet has undertaken numerous EU-funded research projects like REMOVAL, REACTIV, SISAL, ENSUREAL, ALSICAL, SIDERWIN, SCAVANGER, and others as well as offered services to Greek and European Companies (such as Mytilineos S.A., LARCO, HALCOR, LHOIST, PASEK MINERALES, Aplitt AS, etc.). I have 240 publications, more than 100 in peer-reviewed journals, with more than 6500 citations (h-index 39).
